Academia

A highly educated and skilled workforce supports each sector of New York State’s economy. One quarter of New York’s adult population has four or more years of higher education, and more than one million undergraduate students attend the State’s 325 first-rate institutions of higher education. According to the most recent data available, 2,223 Ph.D.s and 7,200 graduate degrees were awarded in science and engineering in the State in 1999, ranking New York second in the nation.

With more than one million students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs at our 325 institutions of higher learning New York ranks first in the nation for degrees awarded in the material, computer and medical sciences. New York State ranks second in the nation for degrees awarded in the electrical engineering, mathematics and biological sciences.
